Day 18 Van Horn, Texas to Kent, Texas

Today was all along or on the interstate.  As yesterday it was a big headwind and cold, but no rain.  Paul P. and I did 36.8 miles and only climbed 927 feet.  Pretty easy except for the trucks whizzing by and the wind.  I was chilled but kept the pace and burned a lot of calories.  There were some interesting sights though - as usual.
First, as we got going along a side-road to the interstate we could look waaaaay ahead.  It was along way indeed, and I was always off on how far I thought things were ahead.  In one case I thought a tower was one mile ahead, but it was really 3 and 1/2!  Here is the sight down the expressway.
When we did get on the shoulder of the interstate, I was not surprised to see the minimum speeds as what they were.  Most cars went faster, much faster.  We however never made the minimum!
The cloud ceiling was low however, as you can see looking at the tower.  Enlarge the picture if you need to and you will see that the upper 1/3rd of the tower was in the clouds.  Low!
One thing you get to do on a bike is take good, long looks at the countryside.  Here is a sedimentary set of rock that also shows us we are in the Mississippi drainage.
We ended this short ride (to finish our time on the interstate) at what used to be the town of Kent.  This is the former school building.  In it's day it must have been beautiful.

So, the day off was really only a half day off, but it helped re-charge the muscle parts and the mental parts of the bodies.  The time we have spent in cold, wet and windy weather re-set our concept of Texas, and we hope we can get back on what the predictions were to be.  We shall see of course, and I will keep my fingers crossed!

Oh, one thing is about a picture Dana took of a local church.  For devoted church-goers, this must work.  There was no one parked in the priest's spot - so there!

On we go!

  1. Nice photos! I thought there was something special about the green semi but then your comment pointed out the low clouds! The school with imagination would have been quit classy in its day.
